Lighters are great. They really are. I don’t know any serious outdoors enthusiast that doesn’t take at least one with them camping.
Matches are ok, storm matches certainly look good and of course everyone likes to use a flint. Some people even bizarrely rub two sticks together and after hours and hours of back breaking work, they might even get a flame.
However, sometimes a lighter just isn’t what you need. For example, you’re making camp and your tinder is damp. You’re not going to be able to hold a lighter for long enough to get stuff dry and burning.
What you need in a case like that is a consistent / wind proof source of heat. And that’s just where this little beauty comes in.
The hemp cord (approx. 15” in length) is impregnated with wax and is a natural fire lighter. All you need to do is fray the ends a little and it’ll take a spark straight away.
I used this the other day to light a bag of charcoal for the portable beach BBQ. It was windy and within a couple of strikes of the flint, this was burning away.
You can use the metal bellows to expose as much or as little of the wick as you need, and it’ll burn for the best part of an hour.
I didn’t need anything like that. About a minute later the charcoal bad was ablaze and the cord had done its job.
